Classroom Home Reading - Managing The Process

Teachers of younger grades want to encourage and develop their students reading abilities, the goal is to show that books are wonderful and they provide more than just words. Teachers will work with students in the classroom on first developing sight words onto simple sentences.

While this development is taking place the teacher is introducing books to the students, the teacher will often assign each book a reading level. This level is determined by the complexity of the sentences and how far the words deviate from the common sight words that are simultaneously being taught. The teacher will then assign a reading level for each student this means the teacher can them match books and student based on the reading level.

Teachers strive to make reading a natural and enjoyable activity for their students, they look to parents to help support this by assigning levelled books to be read at home. This home reading process has been proven critical in how children view reading. In homes where reading books is a treasured activity, the students will often be higher performers at school.

One common problem teachers face is in managing the home reader books, that is which books are currently on loan and to which students. The teacher must keep a list of the books each student has read and chase up books that have not been returned to the classroom. This task takes the teacher away from their core activity which is teaching.

Parents can play a helping role in the home reader program, the parent helpers can collect the books that are being returned on that day and mark them as returned. They can then allocate more books to the students and mark them as borrowed. The reading level assignment helps parents understand which books should be allocated to particular students.

Teachers and parents can use the collected information to work out how fast students are reading books and to which students awards should be given. Also it gives the students a great boost as they progress reading levels.

Parents can use home reading as great way to connect with their children, they should aim to make reading at home an activity that is relaxing and enjoyable.

Technology can help manage the home reading process and teachers and parents should look to embrace systems that allow them to work together to overcome the administrative burden that the home reading process brings about. Mobile and web applications that keep track of borrowed books and student reading history should be strongly investigated.
