In my home we speak English and Spanish with some French. Our children learned to speak both English and Spanish at the same time. We began teaching them from the day they were born. To be honest I was very?worried?about how this would work but it has worked beautifully.
The method we used was very simple, I spoke only English to the children any time I spoke to them and my?husband?spoke only Spanish to them. This helped them hear both languages and begin to pick up words. We they first began to talk they would use Spanglish most of the time but this improve over time, although Spanglish is still used at times.
By hearing the two languages?separately?they were able to hear the difference in sounds and learn the words. We used flashcards in each language to help them learn to spell the words as well. We were?criticized?by many because they felt our children were too young to have so many different words thrown at them. We did it anyway because a child?s brain has the amazing ability that an adults doesn?t; they are able to learn and process much faster!
