November 14, 2012 5:03 PM

A cancer center scheduled to open next spring at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center will offer radiation oncology services jointly provided by the hospital and Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center.

The arrangement is the result of an agreement between HCA Virginia Health System (the hospital?s parent company) and the Richmond-based VCU Health System.

The 7,000-square-foot, $7 million cancer center will feature a linear accelerator, a CT simulator and mobile PET/CT capabilities.? Regulatory approvals for the technology and facility have already been received.

The center will be located in the Pogonia Medical Arts Building, which is attached to Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center. In the first year, it is expected to have more than 4,000 patient visits.?

In addition to VCU Massey radiation oncologists, the cancer center will call on medical and surgical oncologists from the Spotsylvania region plus other physician specialists.

The 2-year-old hospital is located in a health services planning district (Spotsylvania, Stafford, King George, Caroline, Fredericksburg) with one of the highest rates of cancer in Virginia.?

The cancer center will be affiliated with the Sarah Cannon Research Institute (SCRI), a Nashville, Tenn.-based strategic research organization formed in 2004 by HCA and Tennessee Oncology.

SCRI focuses on advancing therapies and accelerating drug development.? It conducts community-based clinical trials in oncology and cardiology through a network of more than 700 physicians in the United States and United Kingdom.
