Review: 'The Watch' An Uneven Riff On Suburban Insecurities ...

(CNN) ? I didn?t know anything about ?The Watch? going in ? somehow missed the trailers, interviews and TV spots that must have been out there. All I knew was the cast: Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade, which seemed like a good start.

Stiller narrates the movie, takes no time at all to declare his Ohio town the best place in the universe and proudly introduces himself as the manager of a certain warehouse store that I won?t name here (but which must have swallowed up half the budget, judging by the constant name-checking). Then, weirdly, the movie ditches the focus on Evan (Stiller) and stays with the store?s night-shift security guard, a guy called Antonio who?s celebrating becoming a U.S. citizen by helping himself to a little vodka and ?Wild Things? on a dozen high-definition TV screens at once.

And suddenly, there?s green gunk everywhere.

What on earth?s going on? What kind of Ben Stiller movie is this?

These are legitimate questions, I think, but neither director Akiva Schaffer (from ?Saturday Night Live? and ?Hot Rod?) nor screenwriting team Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg of ?Superbad? and Jared Stern can muster entirely convincing answers.

The basic plot: Evan forms a neighborhood watch committee to solve the Antonio mystery, enlisting three misfit volunteers to the cause and soon enough comes face to face with the kind of illegal alien you?re more likely to meet in a Ridley Scott horror movie.

In other words, this is your typical buddy comedy sci-fi paranoia thriller ? a lot like ?The Burbs? and a bit like ?Paul,? which Rogen starred in and ?Superbad?s? Greg Mottola directed ? but with less in the way of quirky charm and a whole lot more jokes about male genitalia.

Anyone who saw ?Superbad? knows the phallus looms large in Rogen?s and Goldberg?s comic imagination. But that movie was about hormonal adolescents. Apparently the specter of the penis is not diminished in the minds of middle-aged men.

Evan is, in his words, ?shooting blanks,? and can?t bring himself to admit it to his ovulating wife (Rosemarie DeWitt). His partner in crime-busting, Bob (Vaughn), is equally obsessed with the condoms he sees his teenage daughter?s boyfriend buying. As for the polite Englishman who joins them, Jamarcus (Ayoade), he just wants to join in a community activity ? and fantasizes about the sexual rewards that may accrue to a local hero.

That leaves Franklin (Hill), a dropout who failed to measure up in the eyes of town cop Sgt. Bressman (Will Forte), and who?s willing to put on a dress and go all the way with a suspicious neighbor (R. Lee Ermey) just to prove his manhood.

These are all funny guys, and they do their best to make up for a slapdash script that must have taken all of a weekend to toss off. But Schaffer shows his inexperience by playing everything for laughs. Another director might have given us scares and suspense as well as these infinite riffs on emasculated men pretending to be cops.

The movie has one exceptional sequence, though it froze the smile on my face. Evan has killed his first extraterrestrial, and the guys decide to take photographic evidence ? a ritual that immediately descends into sexual simulation. It?s a goof on the infamous Abu Ghraib photos, a moment of jet-black satire that?s both subversive and tasteless. It?s also much toothier than anything else in this flaccid movie.

S. Korean economic growth falls to near 3-year low

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea's economic growth fell to a nearly three-year low in the second quarter as exports and capital expenditures shrank due to a slowdown in China and debt-saddled Europe, reinforcing views that the central bank will further reduce borrowing costs to prop up the economy.

The Bank of Korea said Thursday in its preliminary estimate that South Korea's economy expanded 2.4 percent over a year earlier in the three months ended June 30, the slowest growth since the third quarter of 2009.

The second-quarter gross domestic product was just 0.4 percent higher from the previous three months, when the economy expanded 0.9 percent.

Asia's fourth-largest economy was widely expected to report weak growth for the April-June period. The central bank unexpectedly cut its key policy rate by a quarter of a percentage point earlier this month, its first rate cut in more than three years.

The surprise easing was seen as a sign that South Korea's export-driven economy will face heightened challenges down the road. Europe appears to be far from resolving its debt crisis and the world's major economies, including key South Korean trading partners China and the United States, are feeling the pinch from Europe's woes.

The slowdown in the second quarter gave more weight to the view that the central bank will lower the benchmark interest rate again before the December presidential election.

The Bank of Korea forecast South Korea's economy to grow just 3 percent this year, down from its earlier forecast of 3.5 percent. An increase in government spending during the second half of this year is expected to contribute 0.2 percentage points to GDP, preventing growth from falling below 3 percent.

Some analysts predict that the central bank could cut its key rate again as soon as August. Bank of Korea Governor Kim Choong-soo said earlier this month that the July rate cut would help reduce household debt burdens and boost consumption, which is increasingly important for growth as exports wane.

In the April-June period, South Korea's capital expenditures and exports contracted from the previous quarter while growth in domestic consumption weakened.

Capital spending shrank 6.4 percent from the first quarter due to weak investment in the telecommunications sector. Exports of goods and services inched down 0.6 percent as demand for petroleum and steel products declined.

Automobile demand contributed to a 0.5 percent rise in domestic consumption.

New Tonto, familiar feelings for Native Americans

(AP) ? Gyasi Ross grew up decades after the "Lone Ranger" aired on TV, but his friends would still call him "Tonto" when they teased him.

"Everybody understands who Tonto is, even if we hadn't seen the show, and we understood it wasn't a good thing," said Ross, a member of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana who lives and has family in the Suquamish Tribe, outside Seattle. "Why else would you tease someone with that?"

The making of a new "Lone Ranger" Disney movie, and the announcement that Johnny Depp is playing sidekick Tonto, have reawakened feelings about a character that has drawn much criticism over the years as being a Hollywood creation guilty of spreading stereotypes.

The film is still in production, but Native American groups have been abuzz about it for months, with many sharing opinions online and in a national Native publication running an occasional series on the topic.

Some Native Americans welcome the new movie, slated for release next summer. Parts were filmed on the Navajo Nation with the tribe's support, and an Oklahoma tribe recently made Depp an honorary member.

But for others, the "Lone Ranger" represents a lingering sore spot ? one that goes back to the 1950s television version of Tonto, who spoke in broken English, wore buckskin and lacked any real cultural traits.

Depp's role attracted particular attention in April when producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a picture of the actor in his Tonto costume. He had on black and white face paint, an intense gaze, a black bird attached to his head and plenty of decorative feathers.

"The moment it hit my Facebook newsfeed, the updates from my friends went nutso," wrote Natanya Ann Pulley, a doctorate student at University of Utah, in an essay for the online magazine McSweeney's.

For Pulley and her friends, the portrayal of Native Americans in Western movies is getting old.

"I'm worried about the Tonto figure becoming a parody or a commercialized figure that doesn't have any dimension or depth, or consideration for contemporary context of Native Americans," she said.

But Native Americans are far from a monolithic group, and many are opening their arms to the new movie. Some are just excited to see Depp take the role.

In New Mexico, where some of the movie was filmed, the Navajo presented Depp, his co-star Armie Hammer, director Gore Verbinski and Bruckheimer with Pendleton blankets to welcome them to their land. Elsewhere, the Comanche people of Oklahoma made Depp, one of Hollywood's most bankable stars, an honorary member.

"In my niece's mind, I met Jack Sparrow," said Emerald Dahozy, spokeswoman for Navajo President Ben Shelly and a member of the Navajo group who met with Depp. "My personal view, I like him playing in a character which he can embody well."

Dahozy said the "Lone Ranger" production brought something more palpable to the reservation: money. The actors and the large crew lived on Navajo land, eating at local restaurants and staying in towns that rely heavily on tourism.

American Indians aren't the only ones conflicted about the character of Tonto, which means "dumb" in Spanish. For Mexican Americans who grew up in the Southwest, the character draws up memories of one of the first dark-skinned heroes in popular culture and anger over a white man calling a brown-skinned person "dumb," said Rosa-Linda Fregoso, author of "Bronze Screen: Chicana and Chicano Film Culture" and a Latino Studies professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

"I remember rooting for him as a kid, but even I was a little bit offended as a child," said Fregoso. "For a grown white man to call someone 'Tonto' meant that you were less than human, not fully human or childlike."

In fact, Tonto's character has historically been called "Toro," which means "bull," in Spanish-language versions of early films, and Spanish language stories about Depp's role in the new film refers to his character as "Toro."

Disney representatives declined to comment, but Depp has said the film will be a "sort of rock 'n' roll version of the Lone Ranger" with his Tonto offering a different take from the 1950s show.

Cheyenne and Arapaho filmmaker Chris Eyre is willing to give the actor a chance.

"Based on Johnny Depp as an artist, and him going all the way and making this film happen, in my book (he) deserves some credit," Eyre told Indian Country Today for its occasional "Tonto Files" series. "He wants to change the view of Tonto, and he put his reputation and his career on the line."

The "Lone Ranger" began on the radio in the 1930s. Tonto was played by an actor of Irish descent, according to the Lone Ranger Fan Club.

The show rocketed in popularity and made a seamless transition to television, running on ABC from 1949 to 1957. In 2003, a TV reboot flopped. That version featured a First Peoples actor from Canada playing Tonto.

But the 1950s portrayal of Tonto by Jay Silverheels, a Canadian Mohawk First Nations member, is by far the most recognized.

He spoke in pidgin and was the loyal partner of the crime-fighting ranger, often bailing out the masked avenger from treacherous situations.

"Here hat. Me wash in stream. Dry in sun. Make whiter," Tonto says in an early episode setting up his relationship with the Lone Ranger. "Here gun to kill bad men."

That Tonto has been criticized as being generic and subordinate ? a character with no individuality and no life beyond helping the Lone Ranger.

Tex Holland, executive director of the 600-member Lone Ranger Fan Club, defended the portrayal.

"I felt the Indians had their own language and in doing so, anyone learning the language is going to speak it broken, whether the person is from Japan or Mexico," Holland said. "I did not look down on him. All of us thought that's the way the Indians at that time communicated with us. Did we speak Indian fluently? We'd speak it broken it too."

Holland and his fellow fans, however, were taken aback by Depp's new look.

"Yuck. I can't believe that he's wearing a crow on his head. And he's looking like some type of medicine man," Holland said. "Disney chose (Depp) for one thing: box office draw."

Reportedly costing more than $200 million, plus yet-to-be-added marketing costs, Disney's "Lone Ranger" is the type of film that can make or break a studio's summer. It's already been plagued with budget woes. The movie's release date in 2013 was recently pushed back a month.

Having Depp in the cast assures more eyeballs will be on the screen. Depp led the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise and anchored "Alice in Wonderland." Three of those movies surpassed the rare billion-dollar mark at the worldwide box office.

Back on Suquamish land, Ross doesn't mind having Depp as Tonto. In fact, the 36-year-old said he would have been more troubled had a Native American taken the role, knowing its history.

But he's worried the movie, which certainly will attract a large audience, will cement a stereotype for years to come because Hollywood doesn't make many movies with Native American protagonists. The popular ones stick in people's minds.

The first "Lone Ranger" did that, as did "Dances with Wolves" decades later, said Ross, an attorney who also writes a column for Indian Country Today.

"I'm not sure how much redefining I'm going to expect, not sure how much of the movie will be something I can show my son," he said.

London Eater ? London food blog and restaurant reviews and ...

For my birthday this year, I was looking to drink something a little special and so BBR became an obvious choice for it carries a list of classy old world (and very collectible) wine labels but with modest mark-ups. Prices track closely to the market conditions, generally with 20 to 30% margin over retail and do present tremendous value compared to ?finer? establishments. Let?s see there the now luxury brand right bank star, Cheval Blanc, the 1996 for ?500; Conseillante, a consistent Pomerol estate (Merlot!) , from a generally positive vintage, 1990 for ?526; ?98 La Mouline, the most feminine of the trio of ?Lalas? from Northern Rhone producer Guigal for ?432. There?s even a Unico by Vega Sicilia, what is regarded as Spain?s version of a first growth, the 1999 for ?317.

1985 Ch Haut Brion, Graves. ?392 + 12.5%

It was an easy decision to pick this claret. It?s got a quarter century of bottle age, and a glut of cellartracker reviews indicating that it is in a really nice place at the moment. In another restaurant, a first growth Bordeaux would easily command a four digit price, so ?392 + 12.5% is a ?relative bargain?. It was also surprisingly close to cost price (330/btl in bond) so it seemed er, sensible to take a punt. So to secure it (by the time you read this, the wine list might have been reviewed), I had paid for the wine upfront sometime in April, 12 weeks ahead of this meal.

Of all the Bordelais, I am most familiar with wines from the Graves, perhaps the only region in Bordeaux where the white wines are as revered as the reds. While the mighty Pauillacs boast fruit and power, I believe they are not as intriguing as the clarets from Graves. The name is a direct reference to the soil character and it is the gravel and clay which are said to give rise to the trademark aromas of smoke and cigars, or broadly speaking the sense of place these wines are so famous for.

I?ve sampled small sips of ?78 Haut Brion (fucking wow), ?66 La Mission (fading in 2012 it seems), the lauded 09 Smith Haut Laffite (TANNINS) but my favourites are the fleshy Chevalier reds (I haven?t tried their whites) which are decent expressions of the region and relatively affordable at ?50 a pop. I have a case of the 09s cellared which I plan to break out when I retire.

I think there is no better way to experience the best of Graves than a good bottle from the Chieftain of Pessac that is Haut Brion (ok maybe its sister estate La Mission Haut Brion). It?s very noble stuff. The Domaine would probably tell you how it has been famously revered through its long history, it even found its way to King Charles II?s dinner table. In those days, it defined a new breed of claret while today it is reputed as the oldest and the only First Growth outside of the Medoc, per the dated left bank 1855 classifications.

Considering its age, the bottle was in a healthy state, at mid-neck fill levels. Though it was slightly worrying to see a perfectly legible label, suggesting a mostly dry shelf-life, which may make for dry corks, but that?s just speculating by inspection. The sommelier popped and poured a small sample in my glass and decanted the rest. He left maybe about a shot?s worth in the bottle, as there was quite a bit of expected sediment. The cork looked pristine, stained to about halfway up, indicating the wine had crucially taken in some air in its long life.

Even before swirling, savoury secondary aromas of tar, ash, cigar, leather and maybe smoked ham were present. It instantly reminded me of the ?78. So all fears subsided ? the bottle had been carefully stored through its lifetime.

As the wine breathed, the fruit started to unfurl, plums or maybe even figs ? a flash of its youth. Through the night, the wine became less shy, more perfumed and more floral. It was a tremendous pleasure to smell the wine and I spent more time doing that than drinking. Obviously I don?t drink trophy wines regularly ? if at all ? so there might be more aromas which I couldn?t detect. However it definitely felt like a step change to anything I?d drank in recent memory.

On the palate, it was simply the smoothest wine I?d ever tasted. This really was liquid silk, as abused as the term may be. It felt polished and precise. This mature claret seemed almost Rhone-like in weight with all the tannins now fallen away. Spicy, maybe soya sauce, but with black fruit in the background and some sweetness too ?somewhere in the mix.

The wine changed perceptibly in the glass as we drank it over four hours. It was fruitier to start and grew to a spicier and more savoury monster toward the end. All the while however, it maintained a poise, an ultra-smooth, lithe mouth feel and drank beautifully till the very last drop. I remembered the long sizzling finish and counted 15, maybe 30 seconds, lingering fruitiness?

?wow. So this is First growth quality.

We were still conscious that this was just fermented grape juice, but it was surprising how harmonious the wine was. There weren?t any rough edges, it was so smooth, so balanced and such a delight to drink.

Was it worth ?440? Is any liquid ? at least 80% water ? kept in a glass bottle for a long time worth that kind of money? It probably retailed closer to ?44 when it was bottled in ?88. So maybe not, but I suppose what you pay for is the promise of intangibles involving emotion and pleasure. Though we did entertain the idea of trying to quantifying this ?greatness? and subjectively, it felt like this wine could justifiable be worth ?300+. ?200 would be good value (in relative terms) , but if it were available for say ?100, we would probably buy a case of it.

Nevertheless, the 1985 is certainly in a nice place today, I felt we drank a great bottle of a great wine providing for a truly memorable experience and this was absolutely worth it.

And now to the food..

Six Colchester Grade ?A? Rock Oysters, ?13.25.

We started with healthy looking rock oysters from Colchester. Creamy, crisp but not as thrilling as the Dorset rocks which our fishmonger sell at our farmers market at Queen?s Park.

Venison Tartare Imperial, with 15g Sturgeon Caviar, ?29.75

I wasn?t expecting the caviar to be anything more than just an extravagant splurge, but the deep saltiness, sticky texture did appear to enrich the tartare. A little excessive but it was an enjoyable one-off.

Crab Salad with Chilli Avocado Mayo, ?11.50

Generously loaded with freshly picked crab, needed a lot of lemon juice but generally pleasing.

Crispy, Pressed and Roaster Belly of Suckling Pork, with Truffle Gravy, ?21.25

This was hugely enjoyable, the crackling was just smashing, the pork was delicious. The black pudding was a little sweet, lighted scented with truffle gravy. Yummy, but probably more so in winter.

Veal FIllet Holstein, with Quail Egg, Anchovies, Bacon and Truffle Gravy, ?21.75
with Lobster Mash, ?6.75.

I?ve had this dish on a couple of separate occasions and have always been impressed. It?s just so dependable, so classic. Served pink, also with lashings of truffle gravy, it was comforting, a joy to eat and it complimented the wine well enough.

Although the lobster mash was certainly the best thing we ate. It was like mash soaked in a lobster bisque. Flavours of fluidised shell, and with generous claw meat mixed in. It was a course unto itself. To me, it seemed exactly what you?d expect lobster mash to taste like. It?s miles ahead of the Goodman version.

Chocolate Glory, MK II. ?9.75.

With chocolate jivara mousse, brownie, meringue and passionfruit orange jelly in a golden shell that disintegrates as hot chocolate sauce is poured over it. The extra special message made out to me with hot chocoalate sauce around the plate, was more than appreciated.

So we paid ?440 for wine, ?139 for the food plus service, totaling ?579. In the end, it was a memorable meal. This old-fashioned-ish brasserie with an eccentric approach to hospitality was a success for a private celebration. Nothing but love for the plush leather-seated booths.

Social Media Strategies and Business; Social Media Marketing ...

A great deal has been written on the topic of social media in business. There are numerous opinions and experiences. Some say that social media is intended for personal use; there are organizations that do not allow employees access to social media platforms. Others say social media is the future; that train has already left the station.

Typically, the discussion revolves around the efficacy and utility of social media platforms like Facebook or Twitter. This isn?t the best starting point for the discussion.

First, let?s distinguish between a social business strategy and social media. Here are definitions suggested by PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC in a study they released this spring:

Social media is the external-facing component that gives and receives customer input.

Social business is where core internal operations, such as customer service, data analytics and product development could use social data

I believe social business is more encompassing. It must include strategies that go way beyond just connecting data and insights. As important as that is, what I am suggesting is, for many, a change in culture. It is tapping into the talent across the organization by reaching across functional silos and fostering an atmosphere that is truly customer centric, collaborative and engaging.

The Vow | St. Peters Fireside | Vancouver Church

This past weekend I had the beautiful responsibility of officiating the wedding of one of my best friends. Steve and I have been friends for 17 years and counting, so it was a special thing to have played such an intimate role in his wedding. Since the wedding I?ve been pondering commitment; the vows have been running through my head. You know ? ?I take you to be my wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, until death do us part.? It?s a fairly audacious thing to say to another person in our quick-fix, jump-ship-when-things-get-hard society. Yet vows are still pledged, they are still our highest ideal, they are still what we hope and long for in marriage, in relationships, in society, and most importantly in our Christian journey.

The vows are intimately connected to Christ and his commitment to us, his body, the Church. Paul advises both men and women to model their distinct, yet equal roles in marriage after Christ and his relationship to the Church.

Marriage gives us a glimpse, a little peek at heaven on earth.

In Ephesians 5, Paul writes that a women submits to her husband as the Church submits to Christ. People are too quick to get all up in arms about this whole ?submission? issue?the next verse resolves it. And, in a way to get caught up on this misses the point. Husbands are to love their lives as Christ loved the Church and gave himself up for her. In other words, a women submits to a husband who sacrificially gives himself up to her. She submits to a man who surrenders his own well being for the sake of her well being. This may irk you in theory, but in practice it is always a beautiful thing because it gives us a glimpse of Christ?s love for us, and what our response to him should look like.

Yet all of this practical wisdom from Paul leads to his last thought on marriage ?the two shall become one flesh? which is a ?profound mystery.? Why is it a profound mystery? Because the union of two becoming one is in reference to ?Christ and the Church?. Christ and his Church shall become one, just as a husband and wife become one in marriage.

Christ and his Church is the most intimate form of relationship: humanity gets caught up in the perfect, Triune love of God. To flush this out, Paul uses one of the most intimate relationships we know of on this side of eternity to point us towards Christ?s profound love for us. Marriage intertwines two lives in the most intimate of ways; it is a healthy forgetfulness of where one begins and the other ends; it is the mutual surrender of anything that may separate what has come together, be it any goal or dream.

In doing this, husbands and wives each get to participate in making the love of God known to one another and to the world. The love of God flows to them, and through them as love mysteriously knits them into ?one flesh?. And this is the relationship between Christ and his Church, between Christ and us. This means that marriage is not just for the married. Marriage is a picture and metaphor for us all to know Christ?s commitment to us.

Since God first loved us, in a way he first says to us ?I take you to be mine, to have and to hold form this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, and even through death itself.?

Jesus invites you into the most intimate form of love. Every desire to connect, to be understood, to be accepted, every hope to be known will be cherished by him. He will give himself fully to you, sacrificially to you. Better yet, the incarnation (God clothing himself in humanity) shows us that his desire to connect with us knows no bounds. The horrendous death he endured was for us to be forgiven and accepted. At our very worst, we are known and cherished.

God has made a vow to us in his Son. Whoever believes in him will be saved from the struggles that overcome us, the trials that bewilder us, the temptation that drags us down, the sin that ravages us, and the death that destroys us. Brokenness will one day be no more because God has made a vow to wipe away every tear from our eyes.

Christ has done his part, he ?gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish? (Ephesians 5:25-27). He has given up everything for us that our lives might intertwine with his, and he has done, and will do, everything to remove whatever may separate us from him. The love of Christ will not let you go. He will relentlessly pursue you because he is faithful to the vow he has made to you.

So what?s our part?

Paul writes that our part is to submit to Christ. And honestly, if someone loves us that much, that completely, and is that committed to cleaning us, to transforming us, and to making us holy, then how could you not give your entire life to him?

Do you trust his vow?

If you had to compare the startup world to one sports league, what would it be? I?d argue the NBA, where the best players leave school early to start their pro careers and work to join dynasty teams with other superstars. Who makes the roster of our tech dream team? Stafford Civil War park transformed by National Guard troops

Belatedly, here?s a still-timely crosspost of a recent story by my colleague Rusty Dennen.

The soldiers of whom he writes continue, day after back-breaking day, to move heaven and earth to build this park to commemorate the U.S. soldiers who ? by the tens of thousands ? encamped in Stafford County, Va., and defended the Army of the Potomac?s turf against a much-feared assault by Gen. Robert E. Lee and his vaunted Army of Northern Virginia.

This is the story?s lede:

Civil War soldiers in Union blue transformed the?Stafford County?landscape nearly 150 years ago during their yearlong stay?cutting trees and roads and setting up vast camps, a harbor and fortifications.

This week, troops in Army green were at work at a 41-acre site where some of their Civil War counterparts once stayed.

Due largely to those efforts, the area?s newest Civil War park could open as early as this fall on the rolling swath of woodland off Mount Hope Church Road.

About 80 soldiers with the Powhatan-based 180th Engineer Company, 276th Engineer Battalion, 91st Troop Command are clearing trees and brush and building roads in a two-week project that began Sunday. The Guard and a local nonprofit, Friends of?Stafford County?Civil War Sites, which is overseeing the project, on Thursday showed progress at the tract to county officials and Bill Howell, speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates.

Dennen?s full report is here.

Pat Gallagher: Rance Howard At 83 -- 64-Year Veteran Character Actor, Father Of Actors Ron And Clint -- Talks Candidly About Keeping His Sons Grounded And Staying Upbeat in an Unpredictable Business

Veteran character actor Rance Howard is a happy man. Although he's been to hundreds of auditions in his 64-year acting career and never quite achieved the superstardom status of his peers -- Spencer Tracy, Humphrey Bogart and John Wayne to name a few -- he doesn't look back with bitterness or resentment. He feels blessed.

The actor, who played Henry Boomhauer for two seasons in the television series "Gentle Ben," isn't exactly a household name, but his face is one you've seen thousands of times. He's acted in almost 200 films and various television shows: "Bat Masterson," "The Andy Griffith Show," "That Girl," "The Virginian," "Coach," "Married...With Children," "Ghost Whisper," "ER"... and the list just goes on and on and on.

Howard's sons -- Academy Award winning director Ron and character actor Clint -- have had their share of good fortune as child actors (Ron played Opie Taylor on "The Andy Griffith Show" and Richie Cunningham on "Happy Days"; Clint appeared on "Gentle Ben"). But when their acting careers took a left turn, dad remained -- as always -- upbeat and philosophical.

Howard spoke candidly about his career, what his past goals were and how he kept his wits about him as a character actor in an unstable, fickle business.

You've been an actor for 64 years. That's incredible. How early in your childhood did you know you wanted to be an actor?

Very early, when I was in the 7th grade. At that point I worked in a little play in a one-room schoolhouse where I was attending school and the bug bit me. My career started in 1948 when I went to New York and auditioned and was able to get a job in a children's touring company doing children's theater. That was my initiation to professional theater and when my career really started.

What was the first role that helped you get started either in film or in television?

One of the most exciting things that ever happened to me was when I auditioned and got in the touring company of a play called "Mister Roberts" with Henry Fonda. I played a character named Lindstrom. We toured about a year and a half hitting the major cities in the U.S. That was really, really exciting because it boosted my career even though I had been working for almost a year in children's theater. This was huge step up. I got that role in 1950. That was really the thing that cemented my career and my life for the course I had charted.

Was Henry Fonda nice to you? Did you enjoy acting with him?

Oh he was wonderful. We had a really good and interesting relationship on that tour. He loved to improvise little scenes just kind of off the cuff -- like for instance, checking into a hotel. If I would be at the register, he would come up and start an argument saying he was really there first. And I would reply to that and we would have a pretty good little exchange going. We fooled a lot of people. (Laughs)

Are there any big stars that surprised you over the years?

While working on "Cool Hand Luke" with Paul Newman, I started out seeing him in the morning and saying, "Good morning, Mr. Newman." He never acknowledged my greeting. In the evening I would say, "Good night, Mr. Newman." At the very most he would give me a bit of a nod. I continued that for two or three days until finally he said to me, "I don't fraternize."

What were your early goals in your career as an actor? Did you want to be a superstar like Cary Grant or Rock Hudson or Humphrey Bogart?

When I initially started in drama school at the University of Oklahoma, I thought I would be a western singing cowboy like Roy Rogers or Gene Autry or Tex Ritter. And I had never even heard of New York or Broadway or stage productions that would run for two or three or four years. That was all new to me. So actually the University of Oklahoma really introduced me to the stage and to theater. I became so enamored of the theater that I totally lost the idea of being a singing cowboy and wanted to really be a serious actor.

But to answer your question, I never really had a projected goal in my mind. I think if you'd have asked me that question 64 years ago, I would have thought by this time in my career I would have been as big as Spencer Tracey, Gary Cooper, John Wayne, Henry Fonda...the big ones. I just assumed that's where I would go. Now, looking back and knowing now how tough the business is, I am so happy and gratified to have been able to do what I really love. Even though I haven't achieved the height that I would have thought I might, I wouldn't change a thing. I love this business, and it's been so good to me. It's been a blessing to have been able to have that intent of being an actor, just surviving as an actor all my life and to be able to have done it. It's just so gratifying.

Your oldest son Ron was a child actor also. When did you decide to get Ron into acting?

My late wife Jean was an actress. We started out in the business together. We had no intention of bringing Ron into the business. He sort of fell in. When the opportunity came up for him to play this part in a movie called "The Journey" with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr, we didn't know if we wanted him to do this. Having been in the business about six years ourselves already, we knew the heartaches and the downfalls and the traps for adults, which are worse for children.

So we talked about it for a long time before we decided, OK, we'll do it. The director of the film was offering me a small part as a Russian soldier. They took the three of us over to Vienna, Austria to be in this movie. I think Ron turned four just before we left for Vienna and he was just an absolute natural. Acting for him was like playtime. So after we finished "The Journey" and returned to New York we thought: We saved his money, it was a good start for his college education and maybe this is not a bad thing. We didn't see anything harmful or detrimental in any way.

Ron was so precious as Opie in "The Andy Griffith Show." You must have been around on the set a lot.

I was there from the beginning from the time they did the pilot which was a spinoff of "The Danny Thomas Show." I had been working in the business. At that point I had been in the Air Force in Special Services directing plays and variety shows so I had a real sense, if you will, of what was needed and what was required in helping Ron learn his dialog and working with him. Ron was terrific. He had a great sense of drama and of timing and how to use emotion in a scene.

Did you become friends with Andy?

Oh, yes. Andy and I became very good friends.

How did you feel about his passing?

It was really a sad day when I heard that. I talked with Andy, I knew he was failing. It wasn't really a great surprise. We used to talk on the phone, and I miss not having Andy around, being able to call him and say, "Hey Andy, how's the weather down there?"

You were in several episodes of "Gentle Ben," which starred your son Clint. How was it working with him on set and then going home and telling him to clean his room?

(Laughs) Working with Clint was a real joy. Clint and I were living in an apartment hotel in Miami. We had maid service. I functioned as his father, mother, dialogue coach, playmate, chauffeur, cook and best buddy. He was eight years old. We worked a five-day schedule on the series. When we returned home from a day on the set, the responsibilities he was carrying made household chores seem trivial so we didn't dwell much on room cleaning.

Your sons seem like such gentlemen as adults. How did you keep your boys grounded when they were growing up?

I think my late wife, their mother Jean, and I ... we were both like depression babies. Our parents really felt the depression and it had really rubbed off on Jean and I so we were both really frugal people.

I was a character actor. I would do a "Death Valley Days" here and a "Lone Ranger" there but they were way out earning me. We could have taken their money and really have lived it up. We could have gone to Beverly Hills or wherever we wanted to and probably leased a mansion to house our family. We chose not to do that. We chose not to live on what the boys could afford, but what I could afford. We drove the kind of car that I could afford. The boys didn't have a lot of money ... maybe a quarter a week allowance. I tried to get them to do really honest work like mowing the lawn, taking out trash, cleaning up things. Jean and I both strived to get them to do that so they would appreciate sweat on the brow.

Show business can be very competitive. Did you feel there was any competition with the boys in any way?

The boys are five years apart. They were never really competitive with each other. Ron was the big brother and Clint was the little brother. They had a great relationship. They still have a great relationship.

Clint starred on "Gentle Ben." How did Clint process that when the acting gigs slowed down for him?

Well, Clint did very well. And the reason he did very well is that he was able to do roles in films and television. Clint was doing an exciting movie of the week and a film here and a television show here. In his growing up, Clint was really not faced with being totally unwanted or not being able to get work. He continued to get work.

Did your sons ever get picked on much when they were growing up because they were child actors? If so, how did you and your wife handle that?

Jean and I did not try to handle the boys' actions and reactions with their peers. If either of them came to us with a problem, we would explain that being in the public eye can cause jealousy and the best thing was to be open and friendly, try to understand and never become fearful. One time at an out-of-town basketball game when Ron had been fouled and was preparing to make a free throw, the crowd started chanting, "Opie!, Opie, Opie!" There referee motioned for Ron to wait. After awhile he blew his whistle, gesturing for the crowd to stop. They did. Ron stepped up to the line and made both shots.

Ron has been a very successful director -- I love it that he has included you and his brother in several of his films. Was that easy or hard to take direction from your son?

Oh, it was easy. To begin with, he is a very good director. He is excellent. An actor is always looking for a good director. Ron is such a good communicator. He can explain to the actors what he's looking for in the scene. He is just a dream director to work with. Some people may feel differently, but I don't have any trouble saying to myself, "OK, Ron is a director. He's your son and offstage or at home or on the basketball court, you don't have to take his direction. But on the set he's the director and whatever he says goes."

Your granddaughter -- Ron's daughter Bryce Dallas Howard -- played Hilly Holbrook in "The Help." I was blown away by her performance. She's a third generation "Howard" actor. How proud were you of her in that film?

Very! I have always been proud of Bryce. She is such a hard worker. From the time she was probably in junior high school or high school, she knew that's what she wanted to do. She took voice lessons, she took dance lessons and she made an effort to get in any play that was going on in school. She's like a really good carpenter or a good plumber or a good electrician who really knows their trade and can do anything you need, anything you want. A good carpenter can build it. She is that kind of an actress.

Acting can be a heartbreaking career because it doesn't always go well for a long period of time. Were you nervous about your granddaughter becoming an actress because of the ups and downs of the business or did you encourage it?

I didn't necessarily encourage it, but I didn't discourage it. This is what she wanted to do so I wouldn't try to talk her out of it. To give you an example, I remember at NYU she was doing a play called "Hamletmachine." In this play it was necessary -- at one point during the play for about 10 or 15 minutes -- everyone in the cast was totally nude on stage.

I remember Bryce's mother, Cheryl, almost putting her foot down and saying no you can't do that. I remember saying to Cheryl, "This is college. This is a learning process. Let her do that. If she can do that it will get rid of all inhibitions and she will never be inhibited by anything she has to do on the stage or in film." So Cheryl went along with that. And Bryce did it. I went to see it, and there she is, an 18, 19-year-old girl stark naked. (Laughs)

What are you doing now? Are you still acting?

Yes. I just finished a nice little cameo role on the film "The Lone Ranger." Johnny Depp plays Tonto and Army Hammer plays the Lone Ranger. It's going to be great entertainment.

Do you still have to audition for parts after all these years?

Yes, as a matter of fact I did audition for that part ... that doesn't bother me. I really enjoy the whole process. I like auditions because it is an opportunity to act. I don't look at it like I'm going in and will be judged and tested. I look at it like: this is an opportunity to perform. I look forward to auditions. I don't always get the part, but I usually do. When I give a really good audition, I walk away saying: that was really a good audition, I really enjoyed that. I don't care if I get the part or not. I feel like I've already done it.

You've acted in so many TV shows: "That Girl," "Bonanza," "The Waltons," "Happy Days," "Little House on the Prairie," "Laverne and Shirley," "Seinfeld" ... the list goes on forever. Did you have to audition for all of those parts?

Most of them I did. I specifically remember auditioning for "Seinfeld." I did two "Seinfelds." I played a blind man and a farmer who had a daughter. I remember when I auditioned for the farmer, I had a really ratty, raggedy old overalls and a shirt that belonged to my dad, some old farmers shoes and a beat-up straw hat, and I went in to audition. I auditioned for Larry David -- who was a hands-on producer -- and I was auditioning with Jerry Seinfeld [in front of Larry David]. I did the scene and Jerry Seinfeld looked at Larry David and said, "Now that's commitment." (Laughs) When I do an audition, I really prepare for it. I really get up for it. I totally enjoy it.

When you were auditioning with Jerry Seinfeld, did Jerry know you are Ron Howard's father?

If he knew it, he just had to somehow know it on his own because I never walk into an audition and say, "Hi, I'm Ron Howard's dad." I never play the Ron Howard card. I don't trade on his name at all.

These Lies for Male enhancement | ReligionA-Z.blogspot.com

Through the age groups humanity is definitely prepared to compensate for any kind of lack of knowledge using a combination of instinct, reduction, statement as well as downright innovation that is typically called fantasy. Misconceptions are stories that are centered to some extent on which males recognized from the information before these. Their goal would be to fill the distance either in information or perhaps in morals.

Among a widespread fantasy which has no actual foundation and is also meant to apply a certain kind of conduct will be the old saying that masturbation makes males go blind. In reality the Switzerland physician Samuel-Auguste Tissot stated within 1760 that their scientific studies proved that masturbation creates a noticeable reduction of strength, of memory as well as of reason, fuzzy eyesight, every one of the stressed problems, worsening with the sex organs dysfunction with the appetite, head aches and a multitude of other problems. It goes without saying that a lot of males living today understand a lot better than to think that.

Yet developed males can be not really able to escape the fear that misconceptions are meant to put in their own people. An additional widespread fantasy promises that lack of sex more than a extended period of time would likely result in the male organ or perhaps testicles to contract. Nevertheless, nor male organ nor testicles dimensions are certainly not linked to the frequency of sex periods or some different of this sort. Phallosan Review.

An additional all-time preferred will be the series of misconceptions backlinking male organ dimension compared to that of another area of the body, the fingers or perhaps toes. Again, there's no scientific proof that male organ dimensions are linked to those of any area with the body. In fact, scientific studies performed by experts identified a weak connection for the most part between the size the male organ and the size the man's toes. Which means that the particular principle is wonderful for, most likely, one man inside a 100.

Much less known misconceptions also provide their own fans. Some males think that h2o might help increase the size of the male organ, which isn't true. Whilst other muscle tissue within the body can grow in size with the aid of added oxygen as well as drinking water delivered by health supplements or perhaps pills, this is not the case using the male organ. The sponge-like tissue called Corpora Cavernosa are not designed to carry blood vessels or any other fluid completely, only as long as lovemaking stimulation occurs.

Whilst male organ enlargement workouts share some functions using the normal bodybuilding strategies, including drinking water to get dimensions are not really included in this. Male organ workouts work by making the cells that comprise the male organ tissue to be able to developed within number, while using body's very own device of adapting to outside strain. The pace with the growth method may be elevated with the aid of male organ enlargement pills that increase the flow of blood towards the sex organs and ensure manufacture of testo-sterone through the body is on the correct stage.

The bottom line is, of course, that no person need to put any kind of inventory within misconceptions. A lot of them pose information to accomplish a certain finish and should not be trustworthy. If you aren't particular about the impact that one thing or any other is wearing the male organ dimension or perhaps love life, then it's better to request a professional, preferably a health care provider. By doing this you'll realize that several misconceptions concerning the male organ are just that: misconceptions.

No room for error in Facebook's debut quarter

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc faces immense pressure to beat Wall Street's financial targets when its delivers its inaugural quarterly earnings report next week, hoping to wash away the bad taste left with investors from a soured IPO.

The No. 1 social networking company's second-quarter report on July 26 will be scrutinized by investors looking for clues on the health of its business, which is experiencing a sharp slowdown in revenue growth and mounting questions about its advertising sales.

With a rich multiple that gave Facebook the distinction of being the first U.S. company to go public with a valuation of more than $100 billion, the company headed by 28-year-old Mark Zuckerberg has little room for error.

"If they miss, it would be catastrophic for the stock," said Michael Binger, a portfolio manager with Gradient Investments.

"This is a very important earnings quarter for them. It will establish in people's minds how they think of the company," said Binger, whose firm does have a position in Facebook.

The bar has been lowered since Facebook warned that a shift in users to mobile devices - where its ability to earn revenue is still nascent - will hinder growth in the short run.

Analysts, on average, expect revenue in the second quarter to grow 28 percent to $1.15 billion. During the same period a year ago, Facebook more than doubled its revenue.

With Facebook's stock still trading at three-quarters its $38 IPO price, executives need to address a litany of concerns about the business, such as the efficacy of its online ads and the company's nascent efforts in mobile advertising.

Investors say Facebook is unlikely to be able to deliver the sort of numbers that can propel its stock back to debut levels, but the risk of triggering a slide if the company disappoints Wall Street is high. Facebook's stock still trades at a rich 57 times forward earnings, compared with Apple Inc's 13 times and Google Inc's 14 times.

"Facebook is probably going to come up with one or two revolutionary streams that are going to bump up its revenue," said Bill Lee, an angel investor who backed companies, including electric carmaker Tesla Motors Inc and social media site Posterous, which was recently acquired by Twitter. But "all the magic they can continue to deliver is already priced in."

    SLOWING GROWTH

More than half of the 36 financial analysts now covering Facebook rate the company a Hold, Underperform or Sell - disproportionately high given that Wall Street analysts historically favor Buy ratings.

The three lead underwriters of the IPO - Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan - forecast second-quarter earnings per share of between 10 cents and 11 cents, lower than the Street average of 12 cents, minus IPO-related stock compensation charges, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Thomson Reuters StarMine's SmartEstimates suggests that Facebook will post adjusted earnings of 10.4 cents per share.

"It gets back to 'How predictable are these companies' results going to be when I'm forecasting out pretty significant growth to be able to justify the valuation?'" said Ryan Jacob, chairman and chief investment officer of Jacob Funds, who does not own Facebook shares.

Facebook, which generated more than four-fifths of its revenue from advertising in 2011, has stepped up efforts to rebuild its revenue momentum, rolling out a raft of new advertising features and providing more details about the effectiveness of its ads.

TBG Digital, which helps marketers advertise on Facebook, released a study this week that found the average price of Facebook ads had jumped 58 percent since last year. That is partially due to recently released mobile formats, it found.

"Our clients aren't spending 75 percent of their budgets on Facebook," said David Jones, Global CEO of advertising agency Havas. But he noted that "there are very few clients who we are talking to who are negative on Facebook."

    GUIDANCE QUESTION

With over 900 million users, Facebook is the world's largest social networking company, challenging established Web companies for consumers' online time and for advertising revenue.

For Facebook, the first date with Wall Street will mark an important test for the company's top brass to try to dispel some of the skepticism. Investors will want to hear from Zuckerberg - who wields majority control - but the company has not said if he will take questions on the day.

"A miss is a miss and it wouldn't be good either way, especially for your first quarter out of the gate," said Colin Sebastian, an analyst with Robert W. Baird.

But the context will be key.

"If it's related to shift in mobile, but the mobile monetization is improving, that's different than just a miss because advertisers are leaving Facebook."

And he said that many investors will be particularly interested in the trends the company is seeing as marketers take advantage of Facebook's mobile and other advertising features.

While most expect Facebook to follow the lead of Google and Amazon.com Inc and abstain from offering financial forecasts every quarter, it may address the current concerns about its business by providing additional color and outlook.

"This first time out, I think they have to give some sort of guidance," said Robert Bacarella, manager of the Monetta Fund, which does not own Facebook shares. "You pacify the near term and say 'Here's where we're going.' But then you set the table up to say: 'We're thinking about whether or not it's wise give guidance going forward."

For all Facebook's efforts to woo Wall Street, the company's biggest job remains building its relationship with advertisers, such as San Francisco's Public Bikes.

"Whenever we have a new bike shop selling our bikes in a particular city, I'll run a targeted Facebook campaign" in that city, said Dan Nguyen-Tan, Public Bikes' vice president of sales and marketing.

The ability to reach specific groups of Facebook users based on where they live and their interests - such as healthy lifestyles or environmental interests - is an important advantage of Facebook's advertising system, Nguyen-Tan said.

But he acknowledged that Public Bikes spends more money advertising with Google, where it is easier for the company to reach people interested in buying a bicycle.
