Emanuel Steward, Legendary Boxing Trainer, Dies at 68 | TIME.com

AP / Reed Saxon,File

Former WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko getting his hands taped by trainer Emanuel Steward before a workout.

(DETROIT) ? Emanuel Steward, the owner of the legendary Kronk Gym and a standout trainer for boxers including Thomas Hearns, Evander Holyfield and Oscar De La Hoya, died Thursday. He was 68.

Victoria Kirton, Steward?s executive assistant, said Steward died Thursday at a Chicago hospital. She did not disclose the cause of death.

Steward trained, helped train or managed some of the greatest fighters of the past 40 years out of the Kronk, a dingy, overheated basement gym that produced world champions like Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard and Lennox Lewis.

(MORE: Joe Frazier, Former Heavyweight Boxing Champ, Dies at 67)

Steward was born in West Virginia and moved at the age of 12 to Detroit. In 1963, an 18-year old Steward, fighting as a bantamweight, won the national Golden Gloves tournament. According to a biography on his website, rather than go forward as a professional he went to work for the Detroit Edison Co. and in 1971 accepted a part-time position as head coach of the boxing program at the Kronk Recreation Center.

A dynasty was born.

The Kronk?s first professional champion was Hilmer Kenty, a lightweight from Columbus, Ohio, who started training there in 1978 and won the WBA title two years later.

It was Hearns who really put Kronk ? and Steward ? on the map. The Hitman was the first man to win titles in four divisions ? he won five overall ? and topped his 155-8 amateur record by going 61-5-1 with 48 knockouts as a pro. ?He brought the very, very best out of me,? Hearns once said of Steward.

The gym for years was seen as a way to keep kids out of trouble and off the streets in southwestern Detroit. In 2006, Detroit shut down the recreation center that houses the gym because of a major budget shortfall. The gym was allowed to remain open, but it put Steward in a difficult financial situation and he rented space at a gym in Dearborn so his young fighters could train.

Steward, who was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, also worked closely with Lewis during his title run, and current heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko as recently as July. Klitschko has trained recently without Steward for his fight against Mariusz Wach next month in Germany

(VIDEO: 10 Questions for Wladimir Klitschko)

?His spirit is always here,? Klitschko said. ?I can hear his voice in sparring while doing things, whispering in my ear. As the famous saying goes, ?The show must go on,? and that?s exactly the case.?

Steward also worked since 2001 as a boxing analyst for HBO.

?Manny was a respected colleague who taught us so much not only about the sweet science but also about friendship and loyalty,? HBO Sports President Ken Hershman said. ?His energy, enthusiasm and bright smile were a constant presence. Ten bells do not seem enough to mourn his passing.?

New finding could pave way to faster, smaller electronics

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? University of California, Davis, researchers for the first time have looked inside gallium manganese arsenide, a type of material known as a "dilute magnetic semiconductor" that could open up an entirely new class of faster, smaller devices based on an emerging field known as "spintronics."

Materials of this type might be used to read and write digital information not by using the electron's charge, as is the case with today's electronic devices, but by using its "spin."

Understanding the magnetic behavior of atoms is key to designing spintronics materials that could operate at room temperature, an essential property for applications.

The new study used a novel technique, hard X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy or HARPES, developed by Charles Fadley, distinguished professor of physics at UC Davis and the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, and recent UC Davis doctoral graduate Alexander Gray, together with colleagues at LBNL and in Germany and Japan.

The research represents the first major application of the HARPES technique, which was first described in a proof-of-principle paper by Gray, Fadley and colleagues last year.

The latest work was published Oct. 14 in the journal Nature Materials.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy uses Einstein's famous photoelectric effect to study materials. If you bombard atoms with light particles -- photons -- you knock out electrons, known as photoelectrons, which fly out at precise angles, energies and spins depending on the structure of the material.

For many years researchers have used "soft" or low-energy X-rays as the photon source, but the technique can look only at the top nanometer of a material -- about five atoms deep. Fadley and Gray developed a method that uses "hard," high-energy X-rays to look much deeper inside a material, to a depth of about 40 to 50 atoms.

The researchers selected gallium manganese arsenide because of its potential in technology. Gallium arsenide is a widely used semiconductor. Add a few percent of manganese atoms to the mix, and in the right conditions -- a temperature below 170 Kelvin (about 150 degrees below zero Fahrenheit), for one -- it becomes ferromagnetic like iron, with all of the individual manganese atomic magnets lined up in the same direction. Physicists call this class of materials dilute magnetic semiconductors.

There were two competing ideas to explain how gallium manganese arsenide becomes magnetic at certain temperatures. The HARPES study shows that, in fact, both mechanisms contribute to the magnetic properties.

"We now have a better fundamental understanding of electronic interactions in dilute magnetic semiconductors that can suggest future materials," Fadley said. "HARPES should provide an important tool for characterizing these and many other materials in the future."

Gray and Fadley conducted the study at the SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility, operated by the Japanese National Institute for Materials Sciences. New HARPES studies are now under way at LBNL's Advanced Light Source synchrotron.

Other authors on the paper are Jan Min?r, Juergen Braun and Hubert Ebert, Ludwig Maximillian University, Munich, Germany; Shigenori Ueda, Yoshiyuki Yamashita and Keisuke Kobayashi, National Institute for Materials Science, Hyogo, Japan; Oscar Dubon and Peter Stone, LBNL and UC Berkeley; Jun Fujii and Giancarlo Panaccione, Istituto Officina dei Materiali, Trieste, Italy; Lukasz Plucinski and Claus Schneider, Peter Gr?nberg Institute, J?lich, Germany. Gray is now a postdoctoral researcher at the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences, Stanford University, and the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in Menlo Park, Calif.

The work was supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Energy and the governments of Japan and Germany.

Newsweek is dead. The 80-year-old magazine will cease publication at the end of the year, a teary-eyed Tina Brown said last Thursday. Before we sink too deeply into grief, let's all remember what lies beyond these earthly, stapled pages. Newsweek may have passed away, its paper turned to dust, but the Newsweek spirit carries on, not as matter or material, but in a state of pure electron flux, a ghostly form that rides the WiFi waves around us. Its words will rise off the printing press and be transformed into an energy that's everywhere at once, but also nowhere. The magazine will become an online angel?a Web-based publication that penetrates our minds with truth and light. In death, it will be reborn and find everlasting life. ?

Sorry, I'm getting all mixed up. I've been having a little trouble focusing since I read Newsweek's cover story from Oct. 15?the one with a picture of a hand reaching up into the clouds and a headline promising that "Heaven Is Real." It's a personal account of meeting God, excerpted from a memoir published this week, called Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey Into the Afterlife. A neurosurgeon? More than that! The author, Eben Alexander III, makes a point of saying that he's a skeptic and a scientist, a skeptical scientist who happens to have spent some time (did he mention?) at a little school in Boston called Harvard University. This science-minded Harvard skeptic never thought he'd find the truth of Jesus Christ. But the facts are just the facts: Alexander has been graced with the divine, and he'll share that grace with us. He's become a neuro-prophet.

This experiment in out-of-body consciousness began in fall of 2008, when a case of bacterial meningitis put Alexander in a coma and "shut down" his ?entire cortex.? What he means by that is never clear?you might think this state would be synonymous with death, which is sort of what Alexander claims, even though he's now alive and writing books. But it's a waste of time to quibble over details, since according to the author, the fact of his brain's inactivation is the only thing that could possibly explain what happened next. While Alexander was in the coma, and his brain was ?totally off-line? he drifted from this world of Harvard neuroscience into a land of pink and puffy clouds, and chanting flocks of angels, and a glowing orb that speaks telepathically, and a blue-eyed lady-friend, and lots and lots of butterflies. You would not believe how many butterflies there are in Heaven.

"I've spent decades as a neurosurgeon at some of the most prestigious medical institutions in our country," Alexander writes, reminding us that he's no sap. "I sympathized deeply with those who wanted to believe that there was a God somewhere out there who loved us unconditionally. In fact, I envied such people the security that those beliefs no doubt provided. But as a scientist, I simply knew better than to believe them myself." He was just like you and me, you see, at least until he fell into a coma?and flew into the sky, and entered the mind of an earthworm, was forced to reconsider all his Harvard science skepticism about the loving Lord above.

Is it even worth rebutting this interpretation? Though it's not yet published, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeons Journey Into the Afterlife has reached the Top 10 of the Amazon best-seller list, so we may as well prepare ourselves for the out-of-mind publicity that's sure to follow. For starters, Alexander says it took him "months to come to terms with what happened," as if he'd had to reconstruct the ultra-real experience after his recovery. One might timidly suggest that the story is confabulated?that is to say, his wounded brain filled in the gaps in time with a holy flight of fancy. (Perhaps his experience of "flying" came from memories of skydiving while a student at University of North Carolina?) It also seems at least half-plausible that Alexander's dreamy chit-chat with Jehovah happened in his head, as he was emerging from his coma, and during a time in which the author says he suffered from what's called "ICU psychosis." In the book?which I've had the great displeasure of perusing?he describes waking up to "a strange and exhausting paranoid universe" in which "Internet messages" showed up wherever he looked, and a "grinding, monotonous, anti-melodious chanting" filled his head. "Some of the dreams I had during this period were stunningly and frighteningly vivid," he says.

It was only later on that he worked out the fine points of his astral projection, in part by using a commercial meditation aid called "Hemi-Sync"?a $12 music CD that purports to mimic psychedelics and expand the mind with alternating beats. "Hemi-Sync potentially offered a means of inactivating the filtering function of the physical brain by globally synchronizing my neocortical electrical activity, just as my meningitis might have done, to liberate my out-of-body consciousness," he explains, as only a Harvard neurosurgeon can. Scientists who are a bit more skeptical have described these claims as silly.

Alexander claims to have been waffling on the matter of his faith before the meningitis. But the book reveals that he's always been a devout or at least a searching Christian. Long before he found himself in the "God-soaked and love-filled darkness" of his coma, Alexander took his family to church and made his children pray every night before they went to bed. His story of enlightenment is suffused with the most conventional evangelism: He was lost and now is found; he has "good news" to share with all. According to the memoir, Alexander was abandoned as a baby, spent Christmas as an orphan, and later on became a depressive alcoholic. Then he goes to a meeting in Jerusalem and finds the spot where Jesus ate his final meal, and while he's there (through some celestial stroke of luck), he contracts the deadly bug that will restore his faith and change his life and put him in a coma for a very biblical duration of seven days and seven nights.

Now, by grace of God, he's scheduled to appear on Nightline, Good Morning America, World News Tonight, and Fox & Friends. His book is almost guaranteed to be a huge success, a work of neuro-prophecy that hauls in massive neuro-profits. There's no doubt that Alexander's publisher is looking back with greedy eyes at another publishing sensation from three years ago, by the neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor. That one, called My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist's Personal Journey, was also based on the rather dubious idea that we might draw a deeper understanding of the universe from debilitating brain damage. Bolte Taylor's rise to fame and neuro-guru-status began not with meningitis but with a cerebral hemorrhage, one that taught her how to find nirvana by allowing her "life-force power" to "flow like a great whale gliding through a sea of silent euphoria."

Summit Court House Party Investigation Ongoing - Westfield, NJ Patch

The Westfield Police Department continues to investigate what has been reported as a case of criminal mischief stemming from a house party that took place?on Saturday, Sept. 22 on Summit Court.?

Westfield Police Capt. Scott Rodger said police were in the area of the under-100 block of Summit Court on another matter when they became aware of the situation.

When asked to confirm reports that most attendees were Westfield High School students who, through social media, learned about the party, which took place while parents were not at home, Rodger said he could not confirm those details, but said police found "numerous beer cans and debris around the patio of the home."

He added that the homeowners reported roughly 150 uninvited guests turned up at their residence and have filed a report citing "extensive damage to the home," including "two broken screens, a broken bathroom window, a broken shower diverter, a broken firepit, a broken wine rack and a broken scale." Rodger said the residents are still compiling the list of items that have been damaged. No arrests have been made at this time, he said, nor have any juveniles been taken into custody.

When asked to comment on the investigation and suggestions that student athletes may have been involved, Westfield school superintendent Dr. Margaret Dolan said,?"We always work cooperatively with the Westfield Police Department. We were told that the police were called to investigate a party that took place on a weekend. Our understanding is that this matter is still under police investigation."

According to WHS's discipline policy, any athlete using alcohol, tobacco, smokeless tobacco, or illegal substances such as drugs or steroids will be subject to the following disciplinary action(s):

First Offense:?Suspension from all athletic participation?for fourteen (14) calendar days from day?of suspension. This includes practices?and contests.

All Subsequent Offenses:?Suspension from all athletic?participation for sixty (60) calendar days excluding?days from June 15th through August 15th.

The above regulations will be placed on the eligibility form requiring parent and/or guardian signatures. Notification of suspension by the coach will go in writing to the athletic director, head coach, athletic trainer, Guidance Department, Health Services Department, and parents.?A record of all suspensions will be kept in the athletic director?s office.

"I can assure you that we work with students on drug and alcohol abuse from an early age and monitor their behavior in school and at school sponsored events," Dolan continued. "We hold sessions for students and parents on the dangers of substance abuse, and we hold our students responsible by requiring them to sign a Code of Conduct. Westfield High School?s administration, the WHS student group called The Dream Team, the WHS PTSO, and Municipal Alliance are working together again to plan an event in February to coordinate all our efforts to prevent substance abuse and to encourage the community to support these efforts."?

Westfield police ask that anyone with additional information contact Detective Gregory Hobson at 908-789-6085.

Five Counterintuitive Ways to Use Procrastination and Become Productive

Nell McShane Wulfhart

Five Counterintuitive Ways to Use Procrastination and Become ProductiveIf you're reading this, there's probably something else you should be doing. You're familiar with the procrastinator's routine?the sinking feeling that grows stronger as a deadline gets closer, the guilt you can't shake and, finally, the full-on panic that takes hold and energizes you enough to get everything done just in the nick of time. It's that last stage we're going to talk about today. You can stop fighting procrastination and make it work for you instead by taking that panic and channeling it into amazing amounts of productivity.

A word of warning: these tips are going to be most useful for people who procrastinate but manage to make most of their deadlines. If you're someone who procrastinates to the point of missing deadlines on a regular basis, I'm not sure what can be done for you. Maybe Adderall.

Assign the deadlines yourself

I'm not talking about putting something in iCal, I'm talking about telling other people?your boss or your clients, people who will hold you accountable. Sometimes you'll be assigned a project with no end-date, and it will hang over your head forever. You know it needs to get done, but because there's no deadline you never prioritize it and you end up feeling guiltier and guiltier. You can fix this. When someone suggests a project or needs something finished, tell them you'll have it to them by such-and-such date. Pick a date that's achievable, but not too far in the future. Put it in writing so you know you're really committed. You'll stress about it, but because you have a deadline you know it will actually get done, rather than occupying a permanent, guilt-inducing place on your to-do list.

Overschedule

You know how they say that if you want something done, give it to the busiest person in the office? It's true. So, you need to turn yourself into the busiest person. Say yes to more tasks than you feel comfortable taking on. Are you freaking out about how you'll get it all finished? Good ? it's that feeling that will kick-start productivity. Let that panic-induced energy go to work. In the end you'll be surprised at how you finished everything and then you can go and take a nap.

Leave things until the last possible minute

If you're a practiced procrastinator, thinking about the stuff you should be doing is taking up a lot of time and brain space. If you can face it, just plan on doing the project in the minimum amount of time necessary to get it finished. You know that when push comes to shove, you can write a report in four hours, say. So schedule "report writing" on your calendar for four hours before the report is due. Then do other stuff. You'll have cleared that brain space to think about other work, and you'll meet your deadline. Sometimes this has the added benefit of making you so nervous about not getting it finished in time, you actually start working on it ahead of schedule. Mission accomplished!

Do the thing that's due last FIRST

Let's say you've got four projects on the go, all with clearly defined deadlines. What do you mean your deadlines aren't clearly defined?! Back up to point number one with you! One of these things is due in four weeks, one in three, one in two and one next week. Work backwards?start on the last project and knock it out. Then tackle the project due in three weeks. Keep this up until it's really crunch time for the first project?the one due next week. Then, let your fear energize you into finishing it. Now you've done four weeks' worth of work in one week and met all your deadlines. Congratulations?you can take three weeks off.

Need more encouragement?

Here's an example?this article isn't due at any particular time. I've got another article due in three days. I'm writing this one first. The consequences of missing my deadline for the three-day article (a reprimand from my editor, possible cancellation of the piece) are bad enough that I'll force myself to finish it on time. And I'll have written two pieces in the time allotted for one. Productive, no?

Procrastinate usefully

On your to-do list there are probably one or two items that you enjoy doing more than others, but which aren't urgent. Maybe they're things like re-organizing your desk, or ordering office supplies, or making your email signature look more professional by deleting that quotation about "seizing the day" at the bottom. Go ahead?do them! If you can channel time you'd otherwise be spending surfing the net and biting your nails about the presentation you have to make on Thursday into something that actually needs to get done, you've just made that procrastination productive. Then, when the presentation is terrifyingly close, let your fear of not being prepared carry you right through completing it.

Chronic electrical stimulation at acupressure points may relieve stomach woes for diabetics

ScienceDaily (Oct. 22, 2012) ? Diabetic patients who suffer from a common complication of diabetes called gastroparesis may find that chronic electrical stimulation (ES) at specific acupuncture points could relieve gastroparesis symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, early satiety, abdominal fullness, upper abdominal pain and bloating, according to study results unveiled October 22 at the American College of Gastroenterology's (ACG) 77th Annual Scientific meeting in Las Vegas.

The study, "Chronic Electrical Stimulation at Acupuncture Points Improves Dyspeptic Symptoms," used a watch-sized digital microstimulator that was specially developed for this project to assess the effects of ongoing electrical stimulation at acupuncture points on gastroparesis symptoms in diabetic patients with refractory gastroparesis. Despite medical therapy, these patients have not found relief for their symptoms and experience frequent physician and emergency room visits or hospitalizations because often they are unable to eat or keep food down and maintain proper nutrition, according to lead investigator Jiande Chen, Ph.D., of the University of Texas Medical Branch. "These are very severe symptoms and could be life-threatening as the treatment options for these patients are very limited and there are no effective medications," said Dr. Chen who noted that the device looks and works like the microstimualtors used to alleviate motion sickness that are already on the market.

Diabetes is a lifelong disease in which there are high levels of sugar in the blood. High blood glucose causes chemical changes in nerves and damages the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to the nerves. Gastroparesis is a type of nerve damage affecting the vagus nerve which controls the movement of food through the digestive tract. Ten to fifteen percent of the 25.8 million Americans living with diabetes have gastroparesis. This condition can worsen diabetes by making it more difficult to manage blood glucose levels because a delay in gastric emptying can cause a spike in glucose levels when the food finally enters the small intestine, according to the American Diabetes Association.

The device used for this blind cross-over design study on 26 diabetic patients with gastroparesis (18 completed the study) was worn either on the wrist or the leg with four-week ES and four-week sham ES in a randomized order. Electrical stimulation was performed via surface ECG electrodes placed at acupoints PC6 and ST36 using pulse trains. Sham-ES was performed using same parameters via non-acupoints. The PC6 acupuncture point is located on the wrist about 2 1/2 fingers up from the wrist crease on the inside of the forearm, while ST36 is located on the front of the leg, one hand width (four fingers) below the kneecap, on the outside, in the depression between the shinbone and the leg muscle.

Patients were asked to self-apply ES/Sham ES for two hours after each lunch and dinner and the electrogastrogram (EGG) and ECG were recorded at the beginning and end of each 4-week treatment.

According to investigators, 4-week ES not sham-ES "significantly improved" 5 of 9 gastroparesis symptoms: nausea by 29.7 percent; vomiting by 39.3 percent; abdominal fullness by 21.4 percent, bloating by 20.6 percent and retching by 31.1 percent. ES also resulted in a trend of increased vagal activity after eating.

"With all five symptoms significantly improving between 20 and 40 percent, this home-based, non-invasive electrostimulation therapy is feasible and effective in treating gastroparesis symptoms and possible mechanisms involving central, gastric and autonomic functions require further study, " said Dr. Chen. "Although this is a small study, the results are noteworthy because the side-effects and the cost are low." Dr. Chen added that the device is not yet on the market.

May the NuForce be with you

NuForce sure has been wirelessly ambitious lately. First, they release the Air DAC, which promises to connect your Apple mobile device to four different receivers. Now they?ve entered the wireless speaker arena with the NuForce S3-BT. Rather than use Apple?s AirPlay, S3-BT surprisingly incorporates the newest version of Bluetooth. This new Bluetooth uses the apt-X [...]

Perversion of the rule of law in Timor-Leste and its impact on State ...

ETLJB 21 October 2012 - The rule of law is an indispensable concept of democracy. Without it, democracy is destroyed and a state based on the will of those who wield political, social and economic power emerges, to the great detriment of the masses who are then subject to? the arbitrary self-interests of the powerful no longer accountable under the law.

During the Indonesian occupation, which was essentially an illegal military occupation, there was, as there are in all states of martial law, a displacement of the rule of law by the rule of state violence. Uncountable violations of the municipal criminal (and civil) law, innumerable violations of the most basic of human rights, the right to life, the right to a fair trial, the right to freedom of peaceful assembly, among others, were and remain, unpunished. Impunity for criminal acts perpetrated by the Indonesian military and police as well as those Timorese themselves who participated in them either willingly or under duress during the 24-year occupation was the order of the day.

In the years since the restoration of independence, there has emerged a pattern of impunity and the arbitrary overriding of the judicial organs of state by the executive along with a growing disconnect between the citizenry and the state and those who occupy and control the state apparatus. This disconnect has recently been articulated and analysed by Neve in his article Legitimate Politics and Structural issues in Timor?s Fragility.

I posit that a central element of this disconnect and the erosion of the rule of law and democratic principles, and, therefore, of the problem of legitimacy of the state in East Timor, is this pattern of impunity for serious crimes as well as the partial application of the law based upon social or political status.

As pointed out in a recent article by Fundasaun Mahein (FM), ?the matter of justice and impunity for crimes is not just a matter that complicates the relationship between Indonesians and Timorese, but increasingly it is a matter of concern for relations between Timorese and other Timorese, inside Timor-Leste.?

Since the restoration of independence, there have been several prominent circumstances of serious criminal behaviour in respect of which the perpetrators have not been subject the full force of the law or, where they have been found guilty by the Courts and subjected to the penalties provided for in the criminal laws which they violated, have been released by the Executive from their legal liability to serve those penalties. All of those circumstances have undermined and dealt debilitating blows to the rule of law and the separation of powers doctrine that form the pillars of a democratic state.

FM cites several ?security incidents? that have occurred in East Timor since independence that have resulted in manifestations of impunity; they being:

1.????? The 2001 house burnings in Quelicai

2.????? The Sagrada Familia ? Colimau-2000 confrontation in 2001 in Maliana

3.????? The Baucau police station attack in November 2002

4.????? The Dili riot in December 2002

5.????? Martial arts fighting in Ainaro in 2004

6.????? The PNTL-FDTL confrontation in Lautem in 2004

7.????? The March 2005 attempted armed robbery of ANZ Bank in Dili

8.????? The 28 April 2006 Petitioner protest/riot

9.????? The May 2006 violence

10.???? The community violence in Dili from June 2006 until Feb 2008

11.???? A number of police and military discipline-related crimes from 2008-2011

Furthermore, says FM, there has ?a trend that sees important people not having to pay the penalty for their actions.? A number of politicians and their relatives have been involved in fatal vehicle accidents since 2004 but have never had to follow the law.?

Behind this impunity and exemptions from the application of the law by blind justice, is, according to FM, the ?socio- economic hierarchy [that] drives the decisions behind how and when the legal rules will be bent in order to maintain harmonious relations or to ?protect? people from the law.?

FM cites the following cases as examples of this trend:

1.????? The case of F-FDTL (East Timor Armed Forces) solider Armindo da Silva convicted in killing PNTL officers on 25 May 2006 at the terrible height of the 2006 disintegration of the rule of law. This soldier only spent some time under ?house arrest? and was then forced to retire from the army.? However the army ensured that his retirement was effected in an honourable manner so as to protect his reputation.? This was because he was veteran of the 24-year armed struggle in FALINTIL and a close associate of the senior F-FDTL leadership despite his relatively low rank.

However, Lucia Lobato comes from a senior and important political family in Timor-Leste and she is the niece of the first Commander of FALINTIL and the second President of Timor-Leste Nicolau Lobato.? As such, imprisoning her for the 5 years that she was sentenced to is proving politically difficult and she continues to walk free to the present.? Interestingly, her husband has also been convicted of company embezzlement and is also at large. Her appeal to the Court of Appeal is still pending some 4 months since the initial conviction. The Court of Appeal continues to say that it must study the appeal.

3.????? Other examples are that a number of high level former soldiers, armed civilians, and the PNTL officers actively engaged in the violence of 2006/2007 have become members of Parliament, senior civil servants, Ministers, and business people.? For some ? crime has been good business and highly profitable.

ETLJB would also like to highlight the following further cases of impunity and/or lenient application of the law based on the status of the accused or convicted person:

?The evidence relating to the unlawful movement, possession and use of F-FDTL weapons is described in paragraphs 95 and 96 and demonstrates that those weapons were distributed by and/or with the knowledge and approval of the following persons: Roque Rodrigues, Taur Matan Ruak, Tito da Costa Cristovao, aka Lere Anan Timor, Manuel Freitas, aka Mau Buti, and Domingos Raul, aka Rate Laek Falur. The Commission recommends that these persons be prosecuted for illegal weapons transfer.?

At least 36 people were killed in the 2006 violence. None of the gentlemen referred to in the UN Report were ever prosecuted and, as FM, points out, some have come to occupy significant positions in the state apparatus. For example, Lere Anan Timor replaced Taur Matan Ruak as Commander of the East Timor Defence Force after Taur resigned his commission to run for the presidency to which he was elected.

Rogerio Lobato, former Minister for the Interior under the I Constitutional Government and a relative of Lucia Lobato also enjoying the same familial connections, was pardoned by the then President Jose Ramos Horta after beingsentenced to jail for criminal violations after the armed Rai Los group claimed he was the one responsible for the distribution of weapons to civilians in the 2006 crisis. The pardoning of criminals by the President was criticised by the Judicial System Monitoring Program and the issue of presidential pardons and how the president exercises his constitutional prerogative to pardon and give amnesties remains unsettled. In June 2008, prominent citizens presented a petition to the Court of Appeal seeking a declaration that other pardons granted by the President were unconstitutional. ETLJB has also published a critique of the pardon process as it has been exercised to date and its impact on the rule of law (see further The Rule of Law in East Timor: Death by a Thousand Cuts). Pardons for serious crimes undermine the rule of law because it subverts the judicial process. Pardons, as well as the impunity (lack of prosecution) for the perpetrators of crimes, also impact on the legitimacy of the state that claims to be democratic but which too frequently acts in violation of the fundamental principles of democracy. It would be an incredulous and profoundly disappointed community that would witness these phenomena and cause them to ask the questions, as Fundasaun Mahein poses:

What do our ancestors think of us? Do they smile with pride, or do they cry with shame? Is this what 200,000 of our fellow citizens died for?

Now enjoy live Cricket Streaming for Free

Oct 20, 2012

Cricket is a very popular game in the world and admired by many people especially in sub-continent and a lot of people are crazy about it. Some people consider cricket as their religion. They watch every game and they remember every statistics. Such people always like to talk about cricket. The popularity of Cricket can be easily understood by the fact that there is always international cricket happening in any part of the world.
Some obstacles faced by cricket lovers are that they cannot watch each and every match live in the stadium and many a times, every match is not in their country or city. Sometimes there are more than one matches are going on and local sports channel is only showing one of the two matches and you want to watch the other one. It also happens that no match is telecasted by local sports channel as the National team of that country is not playing.
Sometimes, your favorite match is going on and your mother wants to watch her favorite soap on television. In some cases, your brother wants to watch football and you want to watch cricket and you have only one television at your home.
Now you can watch live cricket for free. You can enjoy live cricket streaming for free from anywhere irrespective of your location. You just need a fast internet connection. You can watch your favorite sports live with HD quality without paying any single penny. You just have to tolerate some messy and ugly ads.
Free Cricket streaming can be very helpful and useful for under developing countries like India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan etc because of the load shading issue. So if there is load shading at your place but your tablet or laptop is charged or your generator/UPS have the capacity to load your laptop or PC or you have mobile or tablet with wifi feature than you can get benefit from this service.
Watching Live Cricket at home can be a great fan as you can call your friends at your home, buy your favorite Cold drink and some snacks and enjoy live cricket with the comfort Sofa, bed and A/C as you are watching at your home. You cannot enjoy live cricket in stadium with Air condition on and resting on Sofa unless you spend lots of money for special seats.
Some website also offer chat widget so you can chat with others watching same cricket match and discuss performances of players and results of the match and series. You can also cheer your team on such platforms
But one major problem faced by users of live streaming sites are lots of ads and many pop ups. There are two ways to solve this problem. First is to find an ad blocking software which is time consuming. The second one is comparatively easy. You have to search some live streaming sites in advance and filter those sites showing decent number of ads with no pop-ups and bookmark it for future. This one time effort can be very useful. If you start watching it on a low quality sites with lots of ads, your streaming keeps stopping and ads will be disturbing you like hell and that will be on crucial time of match.
So search out some best cricket streaming website from Google and watch live cricket for free.

Werewolves are not monsters from fairytales. Most lead normal lives. They can go to school, get a job, raise a family just like any other human. But there's a catch. If they don't shift frequently, they become ravenous when the full moon is out. The wolf in them comes out, more hungry and cruel then ever. ?
They wolf gene is passed down from parents- even if just one parent is a werewolf, their child will have the same fate as them. Wolves abandoning their pack and having a child with a human is very, very rare. They are usually born into a pack. Werewolves can tell if another person is a werewolf or human, even before their first change. They usually change for the first time when they are about thirteen. Packs often have scouts that find packless werewolves that don't know who they are, and befriend them so when their first change comes, they take them to the pack and they are adopted in.?

But werewolves can also be bitten. If a human is bitten by a werewolf, they will change immediately. The first change is very long and very painful, for Changlings and natural-born werewolves. It can take anywhere from four to ten hours. If another werewolf doesn't help them through their first change, they will likely die. When a werewolf bites a human and helps them through their first change, they are bound together. They can sense each others feelings, and speak to each other telepathically. Once a werewolf bites a human, they are completely responsible for the confused and overwhelmed Changling. They have a hard time controlling changing back and forth between human and wolf, and the world is now so bright it hurts their eyes, and every noise hurts their ears. Werewolves often take their Changling away from the rest of the pack until they have fully adjusted, which can take anywhere from weeks to months.?

If a human is to bear a werewolf child, it is almost guaranteed that she will not survive the pregnancy, and she definitely will not survive the birth of her child. Human skin and systems are simply too weak. This is mainly what discourages solves from having children with humans.?
There is one way for a wolf to possibly save their mate, though. If a human is bitten while they are pregnant, their chances of survival are higher. They do not shift until after their pup is born, but they still have the strength of a werewolf.?
There's a catch. It has to be the father of her child who bites her. Is another wolf bites her, there will be no difference. But if the father of her child bites her, her eyes will flash a very wolfish yellow, just for a moment and she will quickly go from weak and fragile looking to strong and healthy.

Meet the Pack

The Brighton Pack lives deep in a forest, with a large pack house. The alpha is in bad shape, after an attack from a rival pack. His own brother's pack. See, in this pack if there are two or three brothers, they fight to see who is the strongest. The winner becomes the alpha. The current alpha and his brother were never close- constantly fighting. Not brotherly scuffles, they were going for blood even we they were young.?
The current alpha won, and his brother stormed off. He bit humans, creating his own pack. He set out to have revenge on his brother.

After a particularly brutal attack, the alpha is very badly injured. He is not expected to recover. The alpha was the only one injured, but the entire pack is now very edgy and worried about what The rival pack might do next. Especially given the fact that some of the young pack members have gotten themselves involved with humans.

Characters

The wolves

Image
They are twins. One of them will most likely be the next alpha. They are nothing like their father and his brother. They are very close, constantly teasing each other and play fighting with each other. If either one wins, the other will happily back down and support him. They are both 19.?

Oliver Brighton?
Image
Stubborn. He is the sensible one. Well, most of the time. When he wants something, he will throw himself entirely into it. He has amazing dedication, but doesn't back down easily. He is very intelligent, and usually is very gentle but can be very forceful. ?
FC: Finn Harries (reserved)

James Brighton?
Image
Careless. He seems not to have a care in the world. He isn't very serious, and loves to have fun and prank his siblings.??He has a a bright, cheerful soul that is very hard to hamper. When it comes to his pack and things he really cares about, he can be very serious though.?
FC: Jack Harries?OPEN

Image
Image
These two are Oliver and James's younger siblings. They are rather close, and somewhat protective of each other. They fight often, but overall love each other.

Annabel Brighton?
Image
Vain. Anna has a terrible habit of being all about appearances. She hates being ignored, and can be somewhat demanding. Deep down, she is just afraid of being forgotten. She is fiercely protective of her family, and hates 'intruders'.
FC: Clair Holt (reserved)

Nathaniel Brighton?
Image
Player. He hates staying in one place, or with one girl. He can come off a little cold, and is an expert at keeping his emotions hidden. He is really just afraid of falling in love. Surprisingly, he is actually quite affectionate. He's 17.
FC: Caspar Lee OPEN

The humans

Eleanor Whiteraven?
Image
Hardheaded. Ella can't stand being pushed around, or forced into things. She has learned to be very independent, and get along just fine on her own. She is very free spirited, and it's difficult to get umber her skin. But once you do, she is the most caring and loyal girl you could know. -TAKEN-

Logan Nox?
Image
Pushover. Logan is a big softie. He has a hard time telling people no. He is very shy and kindhearted, yet protective of the ones he loves.
FC: Josh Devine OPEN

Caroline Thorn
Image
Bitter. Caroline often is quite coldhearted and uncaring. She doesn't trust people easily at all, and has a terrible habit of using people then leaving them like they are nothing. Deep down, she's really so terrified of being hurt.
FC: Candice Accola (reserved)

Relationships
Now this is where it gets. . . . complicated.?

Oliver, James, and Eleanor
Awkward. At at party they got quite drunk. Both of the boys took a liking to Ella. What happened. . . They were too drunk too remember. Eleanor moved on, thinking nothing of it until she found out she was pregnant. The worst. . . She didn't know which one the father was. The pack took her in, and the Alpha female (the twins' mother) cared for her. She is due within a week and hasn't allowed either of the twins to bite her.

Annabel and Logan
Annabel had always had a soft spot for the human. ?When thought she saw him looking at another girl, jealousy overtook her. In the heat of the moment, she bit him and brought him back to the pack house. Slowly, Logan begins to grow to care for her. (when the rp starts he's just been bitten)

Nathaniel and Caroline
At the same party that his brothers found Eleanor, Nathaniel found Caroline. He got caught up in her beauty but instead of getting her pregnant, he bit her. He quickly realized what a mistake he had made- this complete stranger was completely his responsibility. And she was not going down quietly.?The Alpha Female helps her, aswell, but overall it is his responsibility.

But, of corse, the rival pack is not going to just let them have a happy ending. The more pain they can cause, the better.
