Astronomers detect vast amounts of gas and dust around black hole in early universe

ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? Using the IRAM array of millimetre-wave telescopes in the French Alps, a team of European astronomers from Germany, the UK and France have discovered a large reservoir of gas and dust in a galaxy that surrounds the most distant supermassive black hole known. Light from the galaxy, called J1120+0641, has taken so long to reach us that the galaxy is seen as it was only 740 million years after the Big Bang, when the universe was only 1/18th of its current age.

Team leader Dr. Bram Venemans of the Max-Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany will present the new discovery on Wednesday 28 March at the National Astronomy Meeting in Manchester.

The Institut de Radioastronomie Millimetrique (IRAM) array is made up of six 15-m size telescopes that detect emission at millimetre wavelengths (about ten thousand times as long as visible light) sited on the 2550-m high Plateau de Bure in the French Alps. The IRAM telescopes work together to simulate a single much larger telescope in a so-called interferometer that can study objects in fine detail.

A recent upgrade to IRAM allowed the scientists to detect the newly discovered gas and dust that includes significant quantities of carbon. This is quite unexpected, as the chemical element carbon is created via nuclear fusion of helium in the centres of massive stars and ejected into the galaxy when these stars end their lives in dramatic supernova explosions.

Dr Venemans comments: "It?s really puzzling that such an enormous amount of carbon-enriched gas could have formed at these early times in the universe. The presence of so much carbon confirms that massive star formation must have occurred in the short period between the Big Bang and the time we are now observing the galaxy.?

From the emission from the dust, Venemans and his team are able to show that the galaxy is still forming stars at a rate that is 100 times higher than in our Milky Way.

They give credit to the IRAM upgrade that made the new discovery possible. "Indeed, we would not have been able to detect this emission only a couple years ago." says team member Dr Pierre Cox, director of IRAM.

The astronomers are excited about the fact that this source is also visible from the southern hemisphere where the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), which will be the world's most advanced sub-millimetre / millimetre telescope array, is currently under construction in Chile. Observations with ALMA will enable a detailed study of the structure of this galaxy, including the way the gas and dust moves within it.

Dr Richard McMahon, a member of the team from the University of Cambridge in the UK is looking forward to when ALMA is fully operational later this year. ?The current observations only provide a glimpse of what ALMA will be capable of when we use it to study the formation of the first generation of galaxies."

United debacle underscores need for smarter customer service ...

As I read more and more about ongoing customer service problems at the post-merger United Airlines ? problems that have occurred across all channels of contact ??boy am I happy that I haven?t had any business trips in the past few weeks that required its services. Apparently, this has been the sort of systems migration and process transformation that people will use in case study handbooks for months to come as an example of what not to do. Nearly two weeks after the official merger, and the airline still hasn?t gotten its act together.

This looms large in my mind not just because I happen to fly this particular airline a great deal, but because the sorts of problems that United has experienced are, sadly, not all that uncommon.

The fact is that many companies continue to look at the customer service function as a cost center. Bad, bad mistake in these days of social business. A poor customer service function is one of the quickest ways to completely lose a customer that you have spend bazillions of marketing dollars to win. So why is it that executives continue to shortchange investments in this function, seeking the lowest cost options?

A small personal example. In the past two weeks, I have had occasion to reach out via email in two different customer service scenarios. In both cases, it took more than five days for the businesses to respond ? although they actually did in the end, which sort of shocked me (sad to say). Neither response had the effect of making me feel more favorably inclined toward the businesses. Both focused on excuses, not resolutions.

The irony is that both organizations that I contacted had basically forced me to use email, which is one of the fastest growing vehicles for customer touch. A newly published guide from ContactBabel (sponsored by Zeacom) called ??The U.S. Contact Center Decision-Maker?s Guide (2012 - 5th edition)? found that the use of email has jumped by 67 percent in the past five years, while the use of Web chat has grown by about 50 percent. Has your own company kept pace with that investment?

Here?s another question: What would you think about a business that took five days to call you back after you reported a customer service concern over the phone? My guess is you would have taken your business elsewhere on day two or day three.

News flash, people: Social media and social networks are changing the rules for customer service. Get with the program or all the marketing dollars you spend could be for naught.

Some 2011 research from Forrester Research, cited in its report ?The State of Customer Experience, 2011? suggests that a 10 percent improvement in customer experience ? something that is definitely tied to the support that a person gets before, during and after the ?sale? ? can have a substantial impact on a company?s revenue. In the case of a big company, that impact could exceed $1 billion. Plus or minus. Your call.

Forrester?s more recent 2012 report, ?Navigate the Future of Customer Service? offers more than a dozen trends that should be considered by those in customer service, customer experience or customer support roles ? however you want to describe it. Here are the issues that really strike home for me:

1. Too many companies still maintain separate information siloes for different customer touch points (email, chat, voice, etc.)
2. Speed of interaction is important, but not at the expense of leaving a customer wanting more, so incentives for customer service agents are changing
3. Customer service agents need to be able to go off the script and to quickly find knowledge that might lie outside their skill set. That is one reason you will start to hear more about links between contact center applications, internal knowledge-sharing portals and (yes) external social networks. After all, if someone who doesn?t work for your company has come up with a good solution to a problem, why shouldn?t your agents share that solution?
4. Seamless escalation and interaction is necessary. If someone surfaces an issue in a social network, that issue should be exposed to customer service agents who can address it. Likewise, the company needs full knowledge of an ongoing issue, regardless of whether follow-up happens via phone, email, Web chat, a mobile application or social means.
5. Be proactive about communicating changes, issues and so on. The worst thing that any company can do is try to hide a problem. There are always exceptions, but most reasonable humans tend to be far more sympathetic to those who are honest about mistakes and forthright in their efforts to address or correct them. They have very little sympathy for cover-ups and non-apologies.

The Hague to Samsung: no injunction for 3G patent infringement if Apple's willing to FRAND license

Since it's been more than 24 hours since the last bit of news in the ongoing legal battle between Samsung and Apple, we figured you could do with another litigation revelation. Late last year, the Hague shot down Sammy's request to prevent iPads and iPhones from being sold in the Netherlands. Today, the Dutch court went a step further, telling the Korean company that it can't pursue any other injunctions based upon its FRAND 3G patents as long as Cupertino's willing to talk about licensing them. Not only that, it went on to hold that those patents don't apply in Sammy's case against the iPhone 4S due to the theory of patent exhaustion. The allegedly infringing bits in the handset are made by Qualcomm, who licensed the technology directly from Samsung -- granting Apple protection under the license as a third party beneficiary -- and Apple prevailed using arguments not unlike those it made in a suit it recently filed against Motorola. Score one more legal victory for Tim Cook and company, but as you already know, the war is far from over.

When Apple opens its seventh Houston-area store in the Highland Village shopping center on Friday, it will boast the largest sales area of the company?s Texas retail outlets.

The store?s doors will open at 8 a.m. Friday, the same day that Apple?s third-generation iPad will go on sale. An Apple spokeswoman would not say whether all its stores will open at that time on Friday, but an early opening is typical when the company starts selling a new iPad or iPhone model.

I reported earlier this month that the store would open on March 16.

The store will have an unusual design that features a glass front, back and roof, similar to one recently opened in New York City. The Highland Village store is currently draped with black cloth that will be removed before it opens. The store?s ?back-of-house? area will be on a second level over the Sprinkles cupcake shop next door.

The store will have 160 employees and will be the only area store not in a mall, the spokesperson said. It will include the amenities commonly associated with the popular chain, including the Genius Bar, one-on-one training, group classes and EasyPay, which lets customers buy goods via an app on their iPhones and iPads.

The store will be the second in the Houston region with an area called the briefing room, which is designed for presentations to business customers.

The first 1,000 customers in the store on Friday will get a commemorative T-shirt, the spokesperson said. Chances are that most of those will be buyers in the line that is expected to form for the new iPad, which Apple announced last Wednesday.

The other Houston-area Apple stores are in the Galleria, Memorial City Mall, Baybrook Mall, The Woodlands Mall, Willowbrook Mall and First Colony Mall.

He keeps wasting money on renewables.Somehow we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe," Steven Chu, now the energy secretary, said in a 2008 interview with the Wall Street Journal. A gallon of regular costs more than $8 there. The Oil Price Information Service thinks the average price here will rise to $4.25 a gallon by the end of April. That would exceed the record of $4.11, set in July 2008. A gallon of regular cost just $1.85 the day before President Barack Obama was inaugurated. If the price were to double again during a second Obama term, Mr. Chu's goal could be achieved. Sen. Obama expressed little concern when the price of gas was approaching the current record high. "I would have preferred a more gradual adjustment," he told CNBC in a June 2008 interview. "But if we take some steps right now to help people make the adjustment ... then I think we can come out of this stronger and have a more efficient energy policy." Earlier, Mr. Obama told the editorial board of the San Francisco Chronicle that "under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket." Secretary Chu has backed away from his infamous quote. But that was political expediency. Democrats want high energy prices, but not the blame for them. "If you are a politician who wants to raise the price of gas, you have two choices," said Prof. Walter Russell Mead. "You can persuade the military leadership to install you in office through a coup d'etat, or you can lie to the voters and pursue your agenda on the sly." Democrats want higher energy prices mostly to make alternative sources of energy seem economical. That's a tall order. The Energy Information Administration estimates the cost of generating a megawatt hour of electricity from a new plant would be 66 cents from plants powered by natural gas; 86 cents from hydro; 95 cents from coal; 97 cents from wind; $1.13 from biomass; $1.14 from nuclear, and $3.12 from solar thermal. Only wind appears competitive. But industrial wind turbines are eyesores, they kill a lot of birds and bats, and -- as sweltering Texans and shivering Britons have learned -- tend not to work when it is very hot or very cold. The Obama administration's massive subsidies to "green" firms have produced more embarrassment than energy. Solar panel manufacturer Solyndra, which went bankrupt last September after receiving $535 million, has left behind an environmental mess. Eleven other subsidized firms are having financial problems and five have filed for bankruptcy, CBS News reported in January. In his state of the union address this year, President Barack Obama cited battery manufacturer Ener1 as a government investment success. Ener1 filed for bankruptcy two days later. A few days after Mr. Obama said he planned to buy a Chevy Volt, General Motors announced it will suspend production of the electric car. About 1,300 workers will lose their jobs, at least temporarily. The $38.6 billion in loan guarantees it provided to "green" firms created just 3,545 permanent new jobs, according to a Department of Energy estimate. That's an average cost of $5 million per job. Mr. Obama's "investments" haven't been bad for all of us. Eighty percent of the firms that got DOE loans are run or owned by the president's financial backers, according to the Hoover Institution's Peter Schweizer. "Green Firms Get Fed Cash, Give Execs Bonuses, Fail," headlined an ABC News investigative report broadcast Tuesday. In what was billed as a "major speech" on energy policy Feb. 23, the president pledged to make more such "investments." The speech was remarkable for its mendacity. During the Obama administration, the time it takes to get a permit to drill in the Gulf of Mexico has nearly doubled. Leases to drill on federal lands in the West are down 40 percent. But Mr. Obama claimed credit for the recent rise in domestic production of oil and natural gas. This "couldn't be farther from the truth," said the president of the American Petroleum Institute. We can't drill our way to lower gas prices, Mr. Obama said. The Institute for Energy Research says there are 1.4 trillion barrels of recoverable oil in the United States and offshore, "enough to last at least 200 years." But most are on public lands. Government policy keeps them locked up. "The administration has done everything but support drilling," said retired Shell oil company executive John Hofmeister. It?s the most common cause of cancer in men, and the second biggest cause of death from cancer after lung cancer. Each year around 37,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and more than 10,000 die from it.

At the start of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, we look at the pros and cons of the prostate specific antigen (PSA) test, which can indicate whether a man has prostate cancer.

Currently, the UK does not have a screening programme for prostate cancer, simply because the PSA test is not reliable enough.

The PSA is the only blood test available which can indicate that a man may have prostate cancer, but it is often positive for men who do not have the disease.

For men without symptoms of prostate cancer, the test can help to identify a fast-growing cancer that needs to treated ASAP, but it can also expose a slow-growing cancer with which the man could have lived without treatment until the end of his life.

For these reasons, the UK National Screening Programme recommends that men over the age of 50 should make an informed decision on whether they wish to be tested or not, after a discussion with their GP.

The PSA test

The PSA is a blood test which measures the level of a protein made by normal cells of the prostate gland. Prostate cancer cells also produce this protein.

PSA levels in the blood naturally increase with age as the prostate gland gets bigger. Raised PSA levels can also occur as a result of a urine infection, ejaculation, vigorous exercise (such as cycling) and other prostate conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia and prostatitis in addition to prostate cancer.

Pros

*May detect prostate cancer at an early stage before symptoms appear, particularly more aggressive cancers.
*The higher the levels of PSA, the more likely it is to be caused by prostate cancer.
*If PSA results are low, this can provide reassurance to the man.
*It can also help to pick up other prostate problems.

Prostate cancer

Cons

*The test is not specific for prostate cancer. Two out of three men with raised PSA levels won?t have prostate cancer.
*The PSA test cannot differentiate between slow and fast growing prostate cancers.
*The test is not sensitive enough ? i.e. it cannot pick up all prostate cancers. This could provide false reassurance to men and even cause them to ignore any early symptoms which should be checked out by their GP.

If PSA levels are raised, but the prostate gland feels normal during a rectal examination, a doctor may decide to wait and then repeat the test.

If PSA levels are high, further tests ? such as a prostate biopsy ? may be carried out to determine the cause. Prostate biopsies are carried out under a local anaesthetic. Despite this, some men may find the procedure uncomfortable or embarrassing.

Risk factors for prostate cancer

Being at a higher risk of prostate cancer may influence your decision on whether you want to be tested.

Risk factors include:

*Age. The risk in men under the age of 50 is low, but starts to increase after this. Over 70 per cent of new cases occur in men over the age of 65.
*Having a close family member who has the disease ? father, brother or son.
*A family history of breast cancer may also increase the risk of a small number of prostate cancers.
*Ethnicity ? Men of African Caribbean or African descent have a higher risk of disease.
*A diet high in animal fats and low in fresh fruit and vegetables may increase the risk of disease.

Warning signs to be aware of

In its early stages, the symptoms of prostate cancer may not be obvious. But they may include any of the following:

*Need to urinate often, especially at night
*Passing urine more often, daytime and/or night-time
*Slow at getting the flow of urine started
*Weaker flow of urine
*Starting and stopping whilst passing urine
*Discomfort (pain or burning) whilst peeing
*Feeling of not having emptied the bladder fully
*Dribbling after you?ve finished urinating
*Blood in urine or semen
